Carl Hughes and Paul Hughes

Carl Hughes signed for Rovers in 2004 but before he had the chance to make his debut in the first team he suffered a serious leg injury, and had to spend the off season in rehabilitation. He therefore had to wait until the beginning of the following year before finally appearing for the first team. He made his debut in February 2005 at Hunslet, having previously made a name for himself at Stanley Rangers, gaining BARLA international honours. Signed as a half-back, Carl often played at hooker as his bustling style and solid defence seemed more suited to the acting-halfback role. In total he played 73 games for Featherstone between 2005 and 2008, 41 starts and 32 as a substitute, scoring 34 tries. He later played for Keighley and Doncaster.

 Carl’s younger brother Paul emerged as a direct competitor to his brother for the hooking role in the first team. Paul Hughes also played his junior rugby at Stanley Rangers, and joined Rovers at the start of 2005. Paul’s first appearance in the first team was at Halifax on 14^th of August that year soon after David Hobbs had taken over as head coach. Over the next two seasons he played 58 games, 38 starts and 20 games as a substitute, scoring 28 tries. He then moved to York, before rejoining his brother at Doncaster.
